Your wedding photographs are an important part of your day and an opportunity to create a lasting souvenir of the occasion. Understandably choosing a wedding photographer is a daunting task and it’s natural to want to research and explore as many options before deciding on a photographer you’re happy with.
There are many things to consider when selecting a photographer and to help we’ve listed some of the main considerations for couples when shopping around:
Budget
A key factor in your decision making will be the cost of the wedding photography package you are offered and this can vary considerably. It’s worth getting a handful of comparison quotes and what each quote includes and making your decision on what you feel is the best value.
Tip: Check what you will be getting for your money (see ‘What will I get?’ below) and whether the photographer will expect travel expenses on the day also.
Style
The are differing types of style of wedding photography and these can range from traditional ‘posed’ shots, reportage and natural styles or a mixture of some or all of these.
Tip: View portfolios of photographers to get a feel for their style.
Content and composition
What features in your wedding photography can vary just as much as the other elements for consideration. Some photographers prefer to take key members of the party away from the reception to capture natural shots in an area close by. Others prefer to blend into the background and keep the set-up shots to a minimum.
Tip: Check with your photographer what their plan for the day is and where they will be when. Many brides like having a photographer around to capture the ‘getting ready’ part of the day where others would rather the photographer start from the service, photographing guests as they arrive.
What will I get?
You will want to ask your photographer what you will receive after your wedding day. Some will provide you with a disk of images to use as you please, other prefer that you choose from the shots they have taken and keep control of the originals.
Tip: Make sure you are clear what you will get for your money and that you will have ownership of the images from your day.
